Sinar Sosro Teh Botol Adopts New Plastic Packaging
If you live anywhere near Indonesia then you must have tried or at least know about Teh Botol, which literally translated to English means Tea Bottle. And that is exactly what it is, pure Jasmine Tea naturally flavored with Cane Sugar and packaged in glass bottles. Or at least that's what is was. I cant say exactly how long Teh Botol has been around in Indonesia but I can speculate that it is probably the highest selling non-alcholic beverage in the country. It is available at every restaurant and warung (street vendor) all over the country. Growing up in Jakarta there was not a day which went by that we did not pull over on the side of the road for a cold Teh Botol to quench the thirst.
Teh Botol is owned by Resko International who operate a variety of other businesses in Indonesia. They have experimented with a variety of different packaging for Teh Botol over the years including Tetra Pack and some versions of hot fill PET bottles we well. This is obviously to reduce cost of distribution. Having spent extended periods of time away from Indonesia I was relying on family and friends to supply me with all the goodies from home when visiting. I sampled some of the varieties in flexible packaging but none of them ever really hit the spot. The Teh Botol just did not taste the same.
But recently a friend supplied me with the latest edition of Teh Botol packaged in plastic PET bottles and I was super impressed. The bottle design first of all is a fantastic testament to the traditional glass bottle. They have not deviated from the original design but have made subtle changes which make the transition to plastic well balanced and attractive. They have also added a new variation with less sugar which is great because Teh Botol can be overly sweet for some people. And having tried them both, they taste equally good.
The label design however leaves something to be desired. Teh Botol has a gorgeous natural color so I do not see the value of having a full printed sleeve that is designed to look like the natural contents of the bottle. Also they have not introduced any modern elements to the logo or layout which is a conscious decision but not one I would completely agree with. Nevertheless, I am super stoked that SOSRO has dropped this new product for us which will allow them increase distribution, possibly boost export, and reduce their carbon foot print but shifting over to plastic from glass. Great product from a great company.

Can Simple Package Design Be Too Simplistic?
This is a question our designers at PAE grapple with on a daily basis. How simple is too simple? With our attention focused on Africa we follow different trends than the US and Europe but we have also found that simple design concepts are very effective. But is there a line where we leave brand identity and recognition behind?
I came across a great article on www.brandpackaging.com that shed some light on the subject.
'A prominent trend has been to contemporize packaging by making it simple. Clutter isn’t desirable, but in the haste to keep it clean, is packaging being oversimplified? To the point that it’s starting to look generic? Is this causing more problems than it solves? Are important brand drivers omitted to the detriment of sales and profits because it doesn’t communicate enough to the consumer? Finally, is this hampering otherwise strong brands from becoming category leaders?'

The Evolution of Soda Can Designs (1950-2013)
When is the right time for you to update the design of your brand? Are you afraid to loose customer loyalty by making changes to a design that your consumers are well connected with? When is the right time to move forward and what are the challenges you will face when keeping up with the latest trends? These are all very difficult questions to consider as a brand manager, but you can look to the giants of our industry and take a page out of the history books for reference.
Classic brands like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, 7-Up, and few others have been on shelves around the world since the early 1950's. They understand the need to redesign their appearance every couple of years, to stay fresh and yet not loose their distinguished credentials. It is the most difficult challenge to take that step forward without drawing too far away from your last appearance. Check out some pictures below of how these iconic brands have evolved over the last 60 years.
PEPSI
DR.PEPPER
COCA-COLA
CRUSH
7-UP

Bottled purified water is a commodity in most markets today. Numerous

having a unique brand, good marketing skills, and solid distribution can make
any brand a firm contender.
We offer a cost effective solution that allows any investor to own and

and labels for your brand of purified water.
By setting up this facility the investor also exposes themselves to a
variety of expansion projects that the PAE team has already put in place. Once
the line for mineral water is running smoothly the factory could expand to
produce its own preforms and caps, or with simple additional machinery you
could manufacture and package juices and/or carbonated soft drinks.

Label Expo Asia 2011
China is set to host the largest exhibition of this kind in Asia between the 29th of November - 2nd October 2011 in Shanghai. LABELEXPO is expected to attract over 16,000 visitors this year and will feature suppliers of raw material for manufacturing film, printers, and packaging machines. If this event is anything like previous exhibitions hosted in China, we can expect a very large range of suppliers not only from China but Internationally as well. China's local market is booming and international companies are scrambling to get their machinery into the Chinese plants. At PAE we are looking forward to meeting old partners at the exhibition and hopefully meeting new suppliers to work with.
"The label world is in perpetual motion, driven by innovation and a need for excellence. Rapid changes in the retail sector as well as printing technology have created possibilities that were unthinkable only a few years ago.
There is no better place to see this in action than Labelexpo Asia 2011, where machinery and materials combine to demonstrate the exciting opportunities that exist in our industry.
Come to the largest label event in Asia and see for yourself how you can grow your label printing business, beat your competitors and increase your profits.
Now is the time. This is the place."

ABSOLUT Vodka just got SPIKE'd
Absolut Vodka is notorious for its unique labels, and for their latest installation 'Absolut Brooklyn' they called on none other than the iconic film maker Spike Lee for his input. Probably the coolest feature of the bottle is Lars Olsson Smith sporting Spike Lee's signature glasses and baseball cap on the Absolut seal.

The silk screen print features a classic Brooklyn stoop with the #165 as a shout out to Spike's original roots.
The sides pay homage to a spoken word poem by Lemon Anderson 'Somewhere in the world Brooklyn in da house and you know we won't stop spreading love cause that's our way'
Absolut Brooklyn is red apple and ginger flavor, symbolic of the flavor Brooklyn brings to the Big Apple. Cant wait to get my paws on this one.
