Solar Powered Bulbs Made From Used PET Plastic Bottles

A project recently put into motion in the Philippines is making use of old used plastic bottles to light up homes in shanty towns across the archipelago. By filling the bottle with bleached water and fitting them into the roofs of the shacks, they can refract the equivalent of a 55W built into a dark room using external sunlight. While this does not offer a solution for when the sun goes down, it does provide lighting within dark homes so families can work and study during the day rather than have to spend time outside. In addition the recycled bottle light does not emit any heat and only cost about $1 to make. The solar light bulb is an economical solution that can be applied to schools, factories, and workshops in rural areas.

Around 25,000 low-income homes in the Philippines have been lit up after the launch of a scheme to fit sunlight-powered "bulbs" made from old plastic bottles.

In a country where 40% of the population lives off less than $2 a day, the rising cost of power leaves many unable to afford electricity. Some use candles as a light source, but when generations of family members share a small, dark space in shanty towns, accidental and destructive fires are often the result.

The Liter of Light project was launched six months ago by the My Shelter Foundation, a Philippines-based NGO which aims to provide light to 1 million of the roughly 12 million homes who are either still without light or live on the threshold of having their electricity shut down.

The scheme uses plastic bottles filled with a solution of bleached water, installed into holes made in shanty towns' corrugated iron roofs, which then refracts the equivalent of 55W of sunlight into the room – during the day, at least. It takes five minutes to make, and using a hammer, rivet, metal sheets, sandpaper and epoxy, it costs $1 to produce.

Eduardo Carillo, a resident in one of Metro Manila's many impoverished areas, said: "Before we had the bottle light, the walkways to our house were so dark and going inside made it even darker. The children are no longer scared – they are happy now and they laugh because they can play inside during the day instead of playing in the streets."

The idea of using plastic bottles as a light source is not a new one - it was developed in Brazil by Alfredo Moser in 2002. But with the help of a group of MIT students, the solar bulb used in the Philippines has been modified to meet local needs.

My Shelter Foundation Founder and social entrepreneur Ilac Diaz explains: "We basically did a cheap kind of one-way lock using the metal sheet. Once you put in the bottle, it will not slip down anymore. That way even if the roof expanded or contracted with the heat, it would not affect the waterproofing and would keep the bottle intact for many years to com."

Diaz believes in the importance of using "appropriate" green technologies for poorer countries:

"The challenge is how can the developing world come up with its own model to limit emissions of carbon- we cant afford to buy imported, patented or manufactured solutions from the developed world and can't afford to wait until they become affordable."

The programme is also creating jobs. What began with teaching and contracting one unemployed man to make the first 1000 bottles has evolved into an ongoing program that has creating more than 20 jobs in installing the bottles. "We wanted to prove one man could change his village," said Diaz..

Being a huge Star Wars fan myself, I would love to see a collaboration between George Lucas and Evian water. But alas this is just a concept design by an art student . Awesome work though.

"If watching the complete Star Wars saga on Blu-ray has taught us anything, it’s that the classic films’ beloved characters would look great as design concepts on special bottles of Evian water. Fortunately for us, art student Mandy Brencys took the fanciful notion and made it into reality by actually designing glass bottles of Evian to resemble C-3P0, Chewbacca, R2-D2, Darth Vader and a Storm Trooper. Part of a student design project, these Evian bottles sadly won’t be coming to a store near you, nor to ones in galaxies far, far away. We just hope Mandy’s instructors at Hamburg’s Miami Ad School gave her extra points for not including any characters from the prequel trilogy."

GreenBottle UK to Launch Paper Bottle in 2012

UK based company GreenBottle is set to launch its latest invention, the PAPER BOTTLE as early as 2012. Experts say the introduction of the new PAPER BOTTLE could revolutionize the beverage packaging industry worldwide by slashing its carbon footprint. Big claims but we have set to see the packaging massed produced for industrial consumption.

Martin Myerscough’s invention could help rid the planet of an estimated 30 billion plastic bottles and billions more glass ones that are produced every year – 6.5 million of them in the UK alone.

GreenBottles use less than a third of the plastic of conventional milk bottles, with a much lower carbon footprint. The paper bottle itself is compostable, can be recycled several times and decomposes in just a matter of weeks.

The packaging is made of paper with a thin plastic lining and was the brainchild of Suffolk inventor Martin Myerscough following a chance conversation with a waste tip supervisor worried about the growing and seemingly insoluble problem of plastic bottle waste.

The company, based in Woodbridge in Suffolk, is now close to unveiling new packaging technology it has developed to create even greener and cheaper GreenBottles.

This machinery is truly innovative and totally proprietary to GreenBottle. It will enable the paper bottle technology to be produced in industrial quantities, and cost effectively versus existing packaging.

Turn Plastic Back to Oil?

The BLEST company from Japan introduced a machine back in 2007 that they claim can revert waste plastic back to its oil form, without the use of flames or excessive gas emissions. The claim was revisited recently by Our World 2.0. Check out the excerpt below.

Though Japan has much improved its “effective utilization” rate over the years to 72% in 2006, that leaves 28% of plastic to be buried in landfills or burned. According to Plastic Waste Management Institute data, “effective utilization” includes not just the 20% that is actually recycled, but also 52% that is being incinerated for “energy recovery” purposes, i.e., generating heat or electric power.

“If we burn the plastic, we generate toxins and a large amount of CO2. If we convert it into oil, we save CO2 and at the same time increase people’s awareness about the value of plastic garbage,” says Akinori Ito, CEO of Blest.

Blest’s conversion technology is very safe because it uses a temperature controlling electric heater rather than flame. The machines are able to process polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene (numbers 2-4) but not PET bottles (number 1). The result is a crude gas that can fuel things like generators or stoves and, when refined, can even be pumped into a car, a boat or motorbike. One kilogram of plastic produces almost one liter of oil. To convert that amount takes about 1 kilowatt of electricity, which is approximately ¥20 or 20 cents’ worth.

3D printers have been on the market for some time now but have only recently been better adapted for personal use. Units are also less expensive now and more affordable for individual hobbyists, not just manufacturers or corporations.

3D printers can be used to build small plastic machine parts, sculptures, toys, models, etc. There are numerous brands and models available that use either plaster or resins to print 3D models from AUTO-CAD or other 3D rendering software. These models are not made by cutting away materials as a CNC machining tool would do, rather the models are printed or extruded in layers. The printers can print complex designs.

Watson's Water in China features a unique side handle that is placed on the bottle AFTER the blowing process as opposed to during blowing. Most haside handles are only reliable for volumes up to 3 liters. This handle is applied on a 4.5L bottle. The only disadvantage I have noticed is that it does not allow for a wrap around label, so PVC shrink or OPP are out of the question. More manufacturing solutions out of China.

An Australian company called 'Half a Teaspoon' is dedicated to creating and introducing new products to to their market that would make it easier for consumers to make more environmental choices. Their latest product is the 321 Water Bottle that can instantly purify tap water with a plunger built into a portable bottle. Their website claims that one push will remove 'any chlorine, unpleasant tastes, and odors' from the water.

While the product design is interesting and the concept is commendable, I do not see this product surviving outside an urban environment. Firstly you would require access to fairly well treated tap water, and secondly it is just not as convenient as throwing a carton of bottled water into your car when you are heading out onto the road. Plastic waste is an issue we must contend with but new concepts must consider the function of the plastic bottle. Not only do plastic containers allow us to drink good quality water on demand, but also allow us to transport large quantities of drink water to locations where none is available.

9000 Years Dagu Glacier Spring Water

I stopped in at a convenience store in Guangzhou (CHINA) yesterday and came across this bottle of mineral water. The first thing I noticed was the foil pack. The print claims the introduction of this new outer packaging seals of light and prevents the introduction of electromagnetic waves that would effect the water quality.

Dagu Glacier Spring Water is Nine Thousand Six Hundred and Ten years old. The company pledges that all their products are bottled at source and even go as far as to offer a 1 Million RMB (US $147,000) reward to anyone who can offer proof that the company has manufactured and filled the product in a plant outside the place of origin or any engagement in contract production to produce and bottle the product.

While most 500ml PET water bottles are priced around3 RMB, this bottle of Dagu Glacier Spring Water was selling for 10 RMB (US $1.47). This is the first time I am seeing this water in the market which makes me curious as to how effective their marketing campaign will be. Chinese consumers are generally quite conservative and I can't imagine too many people would pay over 3 times the price of competitors brands to enjoy the purity of 9000 year old glacier water, no matter how good it tastes.

The bottle design is simple, yet attractive. They have utilized a 1.9g HDPE 30/25 water neck closure and a 19.5g preform. It is refreshing to see that they have not gone for a heavy preform simply to make their bottle feel more expensive as some artesian brands do, but the foil pack does seem quite wasteful.

Water for Water

“Recently finished design for a new line of bottled water called ‘Water For Water’ which is currently stocked across all Gloria Jean’s Coffee houses in Australia, with plans to implement the water into the international GJC franchises in the near future as well as other retail outlets.

The goal of the design was to reflect the international goals of the water (via the small text on the front with WATER in different languages) along with providing a design that would stand out from the rest of the bottled water that’s currently on the market. The design of the bottle took on and off approximately six months, going through various different design iterations including trials on different stocks, and was also affected by getting approval for the right launch date.

All of the profits from the sale of Water for Water go directly towards water based projects and initiatives and currently the first project is a Water Station in Caloocan, Philippines. It’ll provide not only clean drinking water at a minute cost, but also host a community centre that’ll he provide education both for children and adults as well as run programs on healthy living.”

Is Glass Packing Best for the Environment?

Beverage Daily today published an article titled 'Glass Packing is Best for the Environment'. While the article does contain some interesting facts, it is however based on a study conducted by the EU Association for Container Glass. 2 countries that have the most successful glass recycling systems in place are Belgium and Sweden with close to 100% of their glass jars and bottles that were put on the market, being collected for recycling.

Responsible beverage manufacturers do regularly ask the question, is glass better for the environment? Based on extensive studies, the answer is yes. But is it a practical solution for 3rd world or West African market place? The cost of manufacturing glass bottles is more expensive as is distribution. The recycling process is also costly and bottles have to be collected from various vendors. Transporting bottles to rural areas takes trucks over some rough roads which inevitably leads to breakages. Glass is also more heavy in areas where goods are transported over long distances by manual labor.

While both Sweden and France have some of the best drinking water available from their taps, they also boast the most sophisticated glass bottle and jar recycling systems. But in places like Africa where there is a greater demand for packaged food and beverages, there are few facilities to deal with the rubbish left over. It is still evident that the recycling technology available in the America's and Europe has not even begun to trickle down to Africa, while large beverage manufacturers can still take advantage of the loose carbon and waste emission laws. It seems to me that the question is not really weather PET or glass is better, but rather, what else have we got?

COCO Organic Coconut Water

Green Coco Europe appears to have a great business model where they source only organic coconuts from local co-operatives. They also try to invest directly in education charities passing on Dr. Martins patented extraction technology. They got a pretty good assortment of products with mixed flavors including pineapple and banana. One of their goals is to expand their range using all parts of the coconut (water, flesh, and husk).

Recyled PET Bottle Dwellings

While PET beverage packaging is practical and cost effective, most manufacturers and consumers alike are aware of the environmental impact our addiction to PET has on this planet. While we can not eliminate the need for PET bottles, there are more solutions available to recycle PET.

Individual environmentalists and scientists have been working with impoverished communities in Latin America and Caribbean nations using waste PET bottles to build homes. They have demonstrated that by filling bottles with silted sand and with their method of construction, "PET bottles make a tougher, more durable construction material than common concrete blocks used in most Central American building."

PET bottles are either woven together and stacked with reinforcement to make walls or even poured in molds with cement to create modular panels.

Not only has this method proven to be practical and durable, some conversationalists are even making these homes look good!

With an island of PET the size of North America taking shape in the Pacific Ocean and our demand for packaged beverages on the rise, this is just another solution for 3rd world markets to consider.

Coca-Cola sells over 1,200 juice products all over the world, with over about 120 brand names in their portfolio. Thier most poplar brand in the US is 'Minute Maid' and they have just enjoyed a long awaited design overhaul.

Duffy & Partners were contracted for the job, taking over what they set in motion back in 1995 with the initial Minute Maid package design. It seems Coca-Cola is taking a fresh approach to product packaging all across the board with design and raw material process. NAYA Spring Water x 100% Reycled PET Bottles

Naya Spring Water said it is the first bottled water company to use 100 per cent recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) in its containers, as it prepares to roll out the product in the United States.

The Canada-based company said it had overcome a number of challenges to bring the bottle to market after investing seven years in its development.

Finding a supplier to develop the technology to make a container of partial and then total recycled plastic had been the first hurdle, a Naya spokesman told FoodProductionDaily.com. Ensuring sufficient supply once the technology was in place and obtaining health certification from various Government agencies had been two more challenges. The final test had been to secure enough retail orders to make the product commercially viable, he added.

Daniel Cotte, president of Naya Waters, said: “We are proud to be the first major spring water brand to introduce 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, which is a win for the environment as well as for consumers who enjoy bottled water and want to reduce their impact. This innovation is another demonstration of our commitment to put the environment at the heart of Naya's company strategy."

While there is an ever growing need for packaged beverages, it is good to see that companies are finally taking the initiative to source more environmentally friendly packaging. The main problem is that there are few cost effective alternatives to PET.

What is the connection between this Vodka and the Kabbalah? I have not idea, but the type for the logo is set to Kabbalh Sefirot and the back of the bottle features some text excerpts from the Kabbalah.

Vegetable Based PET by Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola Co yesterday announced the selective global roll-out of its new PET bottle made from up to 30 per cent plant materials such as sugar and molasses.

The drinks giant said its PlantBottle containers were beginning to hit retail shelves across the world, with a planned production target of two billion by the end of next year.

Hailing the move as a “major step along our sustainable packaging journey”, chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent said Coke was the first to bring to market a recyclable PET plastic bottle made partially from plants.

Variable plant content

But company said the level of plant material in the bottle differs from country to country.

“While the bio-based component can account for up to 30 percent of the resulting PET plastic in PlantBottle packaging, the percentage varies for bottles that also contain recycled PET,” said a Coke statement.

In Denmark, the bottle also has recycled content, meaning its combined plant-based and recycled elements make up 65 per cent of the material; 50 percent coming from recycled material and 15 percent from plant-based material. In the US and Canada, some 30 percent of the content in the PET plastic comes from plants.

The bottle is currently available in Denmark in 500ml and 2 litre sizes, with a December launch earmarked for Western Canada for Coca-Cola, Sprite Fresca and Dasani, as well as in Vancouver for next year’s Winter Olympic games. The PlantBottle will also be available in some parts of the western US from January 2010. Future launches next year are being planned in other markets, including Brazil, Japan and Mexico and China, said the company.

Sugar and Molasses

The bottle is currently made by turning sugar and molasses into a component in PET plastic. The company said its ultimate goal was to use non-food, plant-based waste, such as wood chips or wheat stalks, to produce recyclable PET plastic bottles. The container is 100 per cent recyclable and initial research has indicated it had a smaller carbon footprint than conventional PET bottles, said the company.

Kate Krebs, director of sustainable resources for the climate group, said: "While Coca-Cola is just beginning to bring its plant-based PET plastic into the mix, this is a revolutionary solution that has the potential for long-term, meaningful benefits."

Check out the new concept packaging for canned Coca-Cola. Developed by Ryan Yoon and Harc Lee, this plain metal finish promises to reduce production cost for Coca-Cola and also the cost of recycling. I cant imagine that too many brands could follow suit, but this is a small step in the right direction.

“A convex logo substitutes colorfully sprayed can. Naked can help to reduce air and water pollution occurred in its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of energy and paint required to manufacture colored cans will be saved. Instead of toxic paint, manufacturers process aluminum with a pressing machine that indicates brand identity on surface.”

SIE43 PET Bottle Chair by Pawel Grunert

One of the most obvious drawbacks of using PET bottles is the hornedous toll the waste takes on the environment. While this innovative furniture design by Pawel Grunert is thought provoking, it does not serve any practical function. Constructed from a steel frame sruture and fitted with numerous bottles that can easily be changed out when damaged, the design is visually appealing but I doubt it would be too comfortable to sit on. It was featured at the Ecotrans Pop Exhibition in April 2009.

1/2 Project

The 1/2 (half) Project developed by Kim and Jiwom Park is designed to offer people buying bottled beverages to purchase half the quantity they want at full price, with half the money going to a designated charity. The design would tentativly allow varoius brands of beverage manufacturers to tie in and sponsor thier own charities. While the concept of using a social adenda to boost sales or draw attention your brand is a good one, the cost of the new packaging should logically be half of the normal packaging.

Unfortunatly, as most people in the industry will tell you, this design will be more costly. Firstly a new preform mould would need to be developed for a bottle that would cost almost the same to manufacture as a normal PCO one. You might save a few grams on the weight of PET material in the preform. A normal PCO twist on cap would not be suitable for this design so a new flip top cap would need to be developed. This would surly require more material than a normal cap as well. More material equals more expensive.

It would just be a whole lot easier to sell a 500 ml bottle for the price of a 1L bottle and donate the difference to charity. I doubt too many people would reach for a smaller bottle though. I like giving to a cause, but this design in my opinion is totally off the board.

The Best Water Bottle Designs... EVER!

With evermore brands of drinking water entering the market every year, it is imperative for industrialists and designers to come up with attractive and original packaging for their products. Some brands have even gone as far as releasing limited edition bottles to generate hype about their brands. Here are a few of the more interesting designs we have come across recently. Truly inspirational!

Flavored water with enhanced vitamins. PET bottles. The packaging gives the bottles a pharmaceutical look.

KRUGER Closures - Innovative Cap Design

Here is another interesting product we spotted on the shelf of a pharmacy here in China, KRUGER Vitamin C imported from Germany.

The security seal on the cap is quite standard but the top features the embossed image displaying the correct way to open the easy flip top by using your thumb.

What sets this closure apart is the unique spring feature on the inside of the cap. This innovative cap design apparently reduces the possibility of the vitamin C tablets breaking due to movement of the metal cylinder. It actually works too!

Furthermore, the design of this cap includes a compartment to store silicone or any other preservative. The compartment is then automatically sealed with a paper wad.

PC vs. PET 5 Gallon Jars

We have been receiving a lot of mail about polycarbonate 5 Gallon jars. 5 gallon jars otherwise referred to as 20 liter bottles are conventionally blown from regular PET preforms. Although these are costly to manufacture, because preforms are compact they can be outsourced overseas or from local manufacturers and blown on site by a semi-automatic blowing machine. The problem with regular PET 5 gallon jars is that they do not have a very long lifespan. These bottles are sent out and retrieved on a daily basis so durability is essential. Polycarbonate has a higher density and therefore produces a much stronger jar that lasts up to 4 times longer than a regular PET bottle. In most developed countries PET 5 gallon bottles have already been phased out and replaced with PC.

PC however can not be formed into preforms that can be heated and blown to full size at a later stage. PC jars must be manufactured on a single stage machine, sometimes referred to as an ASB machine. The preform is manufactured then immediately blown into full form while the plastic is still soft. The cost of this machine is relativly more expensive than the PET sollution but is still viable for larger cities in Africa.

Ross Lovegrove x Ty Nant Water

This is kind of old, but an awesome collaboration nonetheless between the infamous Welsh designer Ross Lovegrove and the Ty Nant water company. Ty Nant had already set the benchmark back in 1989 when they launched their water in a blue glass bottle. Until that time blue glass was utilized mostly only by chemists. When they decided to launch thier PET bottle they had to come up with a design that would cause a stir and for that they relied upon the talents of Lovegrove. But how does one switch over to plastic packaging without cheapening the product? Lovegrove took the water back to its original form giving the body of his bottle flowing and natural characteristics. Amongt other things, clouds were his inspiration. His efforts culminated in this award winning design.

Offering a disposal cup with a beverage is by no means a new marketing gimmick, but the Australian wine company Singlz, is enjoying quite a bit of success with their line of 'Shuttle' bottles. These PET containers made by the New Zealand bottle manufacturers Linkplas have been specifically developed to preserve the flavor of wine for up to one year. The designers have managed to retain smooth and flush lines on the bottle that not only are appeasing to look at but also maintain the hygienic integrity of the drinking cup, but also keep the opening of the bottle securely shut.

The Shuttle packaging is obviously ideal for outdoor events like picnics, sports events, or trips to the beach. But is this packaging suitable for the developing African markets? Countries like Nigeria and Kenya might have large enough middle and upper class sectors who might find this product appealing but is there enough demand for sophisticated products like in other African cities to justify manufacturing 'Shuttles'?
